This clinic, stationed in the Lowell District Court, assists victims of domestic violence to apply for restraining orders and coordinates outreach and training with court officials, the police, the district attorney’s office, city officials, legislators, and services providers. The clinic is funded by the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.
Cambodian Outreach Program
The Cambodian-American community in Lowell has faced significant barriers of language and culture to obtaining civil legal assistance. In March of 2001, MVLS began its Cambodian Outreach Project (C.O.P.) as part of a renewed effort to reach out to the Cambodian community of Lowell. The project is funded by the Massachusetts Bar Foundation to provide legal assistance, community legal education and outreach to the Cambodian population.
Consumer Law Project
The Consumer Law Project which is funded by the Massachusetts Bar Foundation assists low-income homeowners in northeastern Massachusetts who are overwhelmed by debt and are facing mortgage foreclosure, debt collection, and/or predatory lending. In addition to providing advice or direct legal assistance, the Project also offers screening and referrals to other community agencies and private attorneys, and works within the community to provide education about rights and responsibilities to low-income consumers.
